Editorial Reviews:

The fastest man on four wheels, Ricky Bobby (Will Ferrell) is one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history. A big, hairy American winning machine, Ricky has everything a dimwitted daredevil could want, a luxurious mansion, a smokin' hot wife and all the fast food he can eat. But Ricky's turbo-charged lifestyle hits an unexpected speed bump when he's bested by flamboyant Euro-idiot Jean Girard (Sacha Baron Cohen, TV's "Da Ali G Show") and reduced to a fear-ridden wreck. Losing his wife and job to best bud and fellow fool, Cal Naughton, Jr. (John C. Reilly), Ricky must kick some serious asphalt if he's to get his career back on the track, beat Girard and reclaim his fame and fortune. 'Cause as Ricky Bobby always says, IF YOU AIN'T FIRST, YOU'RE LAST!

Summary: Skipped Near End
Comment: It was a gift and the receiver said that it stopped playing near the end before the climax and she tried everything to get it to continue to run , but it just started at the beginning again, so she doesn't know how the last quarter ends. This is weird since the DVD was brand new and had never been opened. It got to where it was supposed to in great time and in great condition, so I guess the gift receiver must have done something wrong to it, because she said she had trouble getting it out of the package. I just don't know.....

Summary: Great All American Spirit
Comment: When I heard the line "I'm the best. I piss excellence" and found out it was from this movie, I had to see it. It really struck a chord with me, because I AM the best in my field and I do all I can to be the best I can be at what I do and to always keep improving as much as I can. I am ALL about excellence, supremacy, and success. Most people are about passivity and mediocrity, which I find pathetic and disgusting. On a very superficial level, this movie is a comedy where everyone acts kinda dumb, but when you go deeper, this movie has a really good story and it embodies the big, bold, courageous all-American spirit. This is what America is all about. Go big or go home. Cast aside all fear and doubts and tackle the world with boundless courage, passion, enthusiasm, and a can-do spirit. Be unstoppable. Be larger than life. Those are all things I believe in. That's what you find in this movie. Also this movie has a lot of good comedy and good lines in it. I watched the theatrical version since reviewers said it was better. My IQ is 140 and I didn't think this was a stupid movie at all.

Summary: better than I expected--3.5 stars
Comment: This was actually better than I'd expected. I'm not a NASCAR fan, but Will Farrell does on occasion make me laugh.

And laugh I did. Ricky Bobby (Will Farrell) is a born race car driver who becomes a champion, until an accident leaves him psychologically unable to race again. John C. Reilly plays his sidekick, always coming in second, helping Ricky Bobby win. Will Farrell's over-the-top goofiness was toned town a bit--a small bit, which for me made the movie funnier, because I was laughing at the lines and situations rather than at Will Farrell.

NASCAR is lavishly lampooned, but in such an extravagant and good-humored way that I doubt fans would be offended--the movie takes the stereotypes and runs with them. And there are a couple of subplots that keep the movie interesting--Ricky Bobby's kids are uncontrolled brats until his mother takes them in hand; he has to deal with betrayal and the consequences of his treatment of his best friend; there's love lost and found; and the commitment-phobic father who set him on the path to racing returns to put him back on track (heh. pun. sorry.) with hilarious training tactics.

Jane Lynch and Gary Cole as Ricky Bobby's parents have the best roles, I think--funny, but low-key. The kids were over-the-top both when they were obnoxious and when they were reformed, but that, oddly enough, kept them from getting on my nerves.

We watched this with our sons, ages 12 & 16, and there were a couple of sexual references, but nothing that made me cringe. They were amused, and quoted lines from the movie for quite a while afterward.

It wasn't a great movie, by any means, but it was an entertaining way to spend a couple of hours, and a good excuse to eat buttered popcorn.

Summary: No parking
Comment: This movie was just not funny. Not even stupid funny. It was more insulting on many different levels. I wonder if the screen writer is Jewish, because they have a thing for making fun of everything Christian. I know it's a comedy but it seems a lot of Jews go out of their way to bash Jesus and Christianity. For example Sarah Silverman, Family Guy, American Dad among others. Some things that absolutely made no sense whatsoever. First, Ricky Bobby is kicked out of his own house by his ex-wife and best friend with their two sons. Imagine a divorce court that gives all the wealth, houses, cars, etc. and absolutely no child support for the parent who has custody. Second, the French guy assaults and breaks the arm of Ricky Bobby. No law suit for taking his livelihood. No arrest. No deportation. Also the token black guy bit.

Summary: Great Will Ferrell Film
Comment: I bought this for my son who's 15 and a big fan of Will Ferrell. He already owns the DVD but likes having movies to travel with his PSP. This is one of his favorite movies and full of great laughs.
